Xylofagou beach in Cyprus

Xylofagou is a small village situated in between Larnaca and Paralimni / Protaras. It is only about 20minutes from Larnaca centre and 10minutes from Ayia Napa, Ayia Thekla, Sotera and Liopetri. It is also only 20minutes to Paralimni, Protaras, Kapparis, Cape Greco and Pernera so it is very central.

Xylofagou beach is not one of the blue flag award beaches but it is one of these beaches that is different and attractive in its own way. Follow the beaten tract down, under bushes and tress that offer shade over the path, the sea glistens in front of you. As you approach the beach, there is a silence, a sound of emptiness, a sound of peace and quiet.

The beach isnt sandy, in places there is sand but the most is small stones, the sea glistens and you can see for miles, you overlook the point at Dekelea in Larnaca and you see the aeroplanes landing and taking off even though you are not even close to the airport.

If you follow the dirt path along it will lead you all the way to Dekela in Larnaca, and all the way you will see the sea. It is a calming Sunday drive!!!

In the summer the most amazing sites happen at Xylofagou beach, the culture come alive. The village people bring tents and caravans and camp overlooking the sea, you will see families gathering together, laughing and joking, children playing and BBQ sizzling away in the background. Ramps will be made in to the sea like diving boards, it is full with families and although there are caravans and canopies what goes on underneath them is amazing to watch. Men will play tavli, the same as backgammon, dancing and BBQs is the main event. Over the August bank holiday for 2 weeks many people are off from work and spend nights and nights at the beach with their family.

There is even a small harbor!!!

Ayia Napa Beaches

Ayia Napa beaches run all the way along from Ayia Napa to Ayia Thekla. To find out the ones with blue flag awards click Cyprus blue flag beaches

To give a brief knowledge of Ayia Napa it is situated between Protaras / Paralimni and Larnaca. However, Ayia Napa is also very close Ayia Thekla, Potamos, Liopetri, Sotera, Xylofagou and Vrysoules and is in the east coast of Cyprus.

There are plenty of beaches to attract plenty of people from all over the world to take a holiday in Cyprus. The first beach that springs to mind in Ayia Napa is Nissi beach, everyone knows Nissi beach. Nissi beach is an ideal party all day and all night beach. With music and sparkling waters mixed with white sands there is a calming and party atmosphere going on. Families, couples and friends are all together at Nissi beach!

Another beach is Macronissos beach, again in Ayia Napa but a little calmer than nissi beach ideal for families.

Then there is sandy bay, lively and calm at the same time!!!

The beaches in Ayia Napa mainly have the blue flag awards and the pathways have been created for people to enjoy all of the beaches and the scenery.

There are plenty of water sports available in Ayia Napa from paragliding to jet skiing...

If you are looking at what to do when you are over here, in the winter you have to go skiing, http://www.skicyprus.com/ and in the summer don't miss the Ayia Napa festival!!!

Protaras Beaches

The beautiful beaches of Protaras stretch for miles. You can walk the coast line all the way from Ayia Napa to Kapparis if you wanted to, following through Cape Greco, Green Bay, Protaras, Pernera and Ayia Triada. Linking all the areas together there are many caves and coves waiting to be discovered.
Protaras has some of the loveliest stretches of beaches, with white sand and crystal clear waters... so clear you can see your own feet. The warm waters gently lap against the shore as holidays makers from all over the world come to enjoy the surroundings.
The most famous beach of Protaras is "Fig Tree Bay", mainly famous for the island that it looks over. There is a small island that is swimming distance from the beach and is a focal point of the beach.

Along the walkways from Fig Tree bay to other Protaras beaches known as Sunrise and Yianna Marie there are beautiful flowers and palm trees along with a volleyball area overlooking the sea for anyone usage.

There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments along the walk, try a "Frapee" a local cold ice coffee, very nice and refreshing and usually served with a glass of water. There are different types of frappe so order it how you like, I like mine with mainly milk, a little bit of water and very sweet.

On the beaches you will find water sport activities:
  • Banana boat

  • donut rings

  • Fly fish

  • Jet Ski

  • speed boats
  • Pedalo

  • Paragliding

  • Water skiing

  • canoe's

Plus there are boat trips from the beaches, different types some with BBQ's, some history trips, some fun trips too. Also there are private trips and night boat trips as well which are worth some consideration. Other water activities available at the beach are massages at sun down and diving.

Cyprus Blue flag beaches

Cyprus is the island with sparkling blue seas and perfect golden beaches. In 1995 the Cyprus tourist organisation along with the Cyprus Marine protection association were first introduced to the blue flag award scheme. The blue flag award scheme has 27 regulations that countries must follow in order to have a blue flag award. The obvious rule is saftety and clean and tidy bathing areas and swimming areas. Back when the scheme first began, there were only 11 beaches to be awarded the blue flag in 1996... now an astonishing 59 beaches in Cyprus have been awarded the blue flag award, these can be found between Kapparis and Protaras, going along the coast line to Larnaca, then along to Limasol and from there towards Paphos itself.

The cyprus beaches are great for holiday or long term living as they have many things to offer, such as water sports facilities, perfect scuba diving areas, golden sandy beaches, toilet and shower facilities and most importantly crystal clear waters. Some of the beaches with the blue flag awards are listed bellow for reference.

I grew up on Protaras beach, it stretches for miles, when you look out all you can see is sand and sea and the palm trees... plus families with children, couples wandering the shore line with flip flops in the one hand and hand in hand with the other. It is strange how Cyprus has a way of bringing out the calmness in people from young to old, time drifts by and doesnt matter if its 2am or 9pm... it is a living game, just live each moment!!!

The Protaras beaches are:
Pernera, Vryssi, Protaras beaches like the Vrissiana, fig tree bay and Yianna marie beach.

Beaches in the Ayia Napa area:

For holidays the beaches are beautiful for all holiday makers, young and old. Protaras has many hotels close to the beach front or if you would like a better type of holiday, maybe you will hire a car, why not rent a villa or apartment as they are just as close to the sea and many are walking distance to blue flag award beaches. Spot on villa rentals and phelena rent a car are good companies as an alternative to staying in a hotel.
